Initiative “We want to believe” originated as a natural reaction of non-governmental organisations Institute SGI, Aliancia Fair-Play, Via Iuris, Nadácia Zastavme korupciu, Human Rights League, Open Society Foundation and Foundation Pontis to events of the past weeks in Slovak society. Murder of an investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his girlfriend Martina Kušnírová, as well as serious findings Ján unearthed in his articles, cannot stay forgotten. In addition to exposed shortcomings, be it in the area of protection of individual citizens, law enforcement, or political culture, it is necessary to react mainly to an acute necessity of reconstruction of the law enforcement and the trust in governmental institutions.
We want to believe is a response to present-day political and social situation. Democracy vitally needs independent and functioning police, prosecution and judiciary. The rule of law cannot be established without them. Initiative for the return of belief in the state has signed more than 200 public figures and has more than 6000 signatories. You can find concrete systemic solutions here (Slovak). More information about the initiative here (Slovak).
